A Travel Guide to Hawaii

Hawaii is the youngest of the US states and is an archipelago located in the northern Pacific Ocean. There are eight islands in the archipelago but only six are accessible to tourists. Hawaii is known for is beautiful beaches and its active volcanoes.

‘Big Island’ is actually the nickname for the island of Hawaii, but to stop confusion it is mostly referred to by its nickname alone. This island is known for its actively changing, volcanic landscape and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park offers visitors the chance to get up close and personal with flowing lava. There are boats that move close to where the lava flows into the sea offering a sight like no other.

The Island of Maui is extremely popular with those looking to explore the oceans and the wildlife of Hawaii. Maui is home to the Atlantis Adventures Submarine tours. Visitors can spend time under the sea around Maui with all the underwater wildlife that surrounds the island. Whale watching tours are also a popular pass time; Humpback whales are regularly seen leaping from the water in a spectacular display.

Molokai and Lanai are two of the smaller islands of Hawaii; there are many beautiful beaches and scuba diving opportunities to enjoy on these islands and there are regular ferry trips to and from Maui.

Oahu is known as the home of Pearl Harbour, site of the notorious Japanese attack on American warships during WWII, an attack that brought the United States into the war. Today there is a permanent memorial to those who died in the attack, the sunken battleship USS Arizona still lies on the harbour floor and can be seen in the USS Arizona Memorial. The USS Missouri is a museum ship and visitors can explore the deck of the huge battleship. Oahu is also home of the world famous Waikiki Beach and the state capital, Honolulu.

The final island is Kauai. Known for its incredible beauty, it is often used for location shooting in feature films including King Kong, Jurassic Park and Raiders of the Lost Ark. One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Kauai is hiking. Most of the island is inaccessible by road but there are many trails to enjoy.

There is a wide variety of self catering vacation rentals in Hawaii ranging from condos on Waikiki Beach to realaxing luxury vacation homes on Big Island.
