A Travel Guide to Mexico

Mexico is the most populous Spanish-speaking country in the world that lies below four southern states on its northern border. It curves into the shape of a bull’s hind leg with a tail on its north western coast that forms the Gulf of California. The countries of Guatemala and Belize slip under the sole of its southern foot.

The temperatures can vary considerably in Mexico depending on elevation and the climatic conditions that affect the United States can affect the north of Mexico too. The best place for sun worshippers and beach goers would be the toe tip of south east Mexico in the super fine sugar white beaches of Cancun. Cancun has annual temperatures that vary from 23°- 30°. It also has a host of organised water sports for diving, sailing and windsurfing related activities. Visitors can also dry tour the underwater world of the Caribbean Sea in a glass bottomed boat or drop a rod and take in some rewarding deep sea fishing.

Further south of Cancun is the Riviera Maya that offers four theme parks and a wonderful stretch of beach. It also includes the village where you can see Mayan ruins of Tulum, the culture that influenced and predated the Aztecs. The Riviera Maya also has purposefully built areas with ecology and tourism in mind, set to pamper but yet conserve the environment. They also contain water sports and zip lining through the lush tropical jungle.

Mexico City is the country’s capital and lies central – almost equidistant to Cancun and its border with Texas. It is rich in history having been the capital of the Aztec Empire of which Hernan Cortes the Spanish Conquistador conquered in 1521. There are still remnants of the Aztec Empire and there is a lot of respect given by the Mexicans to the pre-Spanish Conquest way of life.

The Templo Mayor was once a great pyramid that housed two temples at the top of it. Nowadays visitors can only see the base of the interior. Another remnant of the ancient Aztec civilisation is the floating gardens known as Xochimilco that were designed to feed their growing nation. Today only canals are testament to their great origin, today they are filled with brightly coloured boats that will gladly take visitors on a trip around the area. There is also the National Anthropology Museum with its famous Aztec Sun Stone which was used by the ancient civilisation to count their days.

There are also other historical sites in Mexico City including the sinking Metropolitan Cathedral, the government buildings of the National Palace that contain some of the celebrated national artist Diego Rivera works of art of which visitors can see more of in the Fine Arts Palace.

There is a wide variety of self catering vacation rentals in Mexico besides yacht charters and boats that can be rented, there is also plenty of accommodation ranging from modest one or two roomed condos - to beachside vacation homes and traditional haciendas with pools and spas near the white sands of Cancun - and the alluring eco-theme parks on the Riviera Maya.
