A Travel Guide to Montana

Montana is the 4th largest US state and has the longest border with Canada. Left to right on the northern border are the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The United States’ territories including Montana itself are the Dakotas, North and South lining its eastern border with Idaho forming the western border that curves around to Wyoming on the south completing the neighbourly embrace.

Its elevations vary immensely and this coupled with its geographical variations causes a variety of differing weather conditions. Generally, though the west is normally warmer in the winter and the east is generally warmer in the summer. In the east it can even reach temperatures more common with the southern states due to the climatic variation.

The capital of Montana is Helena and it lies in a county named after the great state funded trail pioneers Lewis and Clark. Two of its most important monuments are Montana State Capitol and the Cathedral of Saint Helena. There is also the Original Governor’s Mansion and the Montana Historical Society Museum that recalls its early days to the present. There are also many buildings built in architectural style that grace this fair city. Phillipsburg and the area of Bannock State Park also have a curiosity of period style buildings. However, Helena though it is the capital and Billings is its biggest city – they are not sprawling metropolises. The cities and towns are humble, probably reflecting the knowledge that any response to do otherwise could not match the splendour of their diverse Montana landscape.

The Glacier National Park falls into the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains in the North of Montana, where forested alpine trees, dew tipped grasses, and a serene sky fully reflect on the surfaces of their still mountain lakes. One of the best ways to approach this vista-unique is via the Going-To-Sun-Road. This can either be done by car or on the regular red buses that allow you to take photographs and take in the awe of the deepness and vastness of this scenic mountain-scape.

Yellowstone National Park is the first and the largest National Park to be established in the United States. Three of its five gates are located in Montana with breath-taking views of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and its sapphire blue waters of its namesake lake. Here you can view the many geysers including Old Faithful that punctually entertains its many visitors with its regular eruptions.

Other places of great interest and scenic splendour are Buffalo Jump State Park and the Fort Union Trading Post which are famous for their Native American history, hunting and trading. Sports and recreation are conducive to their environment with hiking and biking in the many pastoral backdrops and in the great winter; the enjoyable pastime of skiing at the many resorts of Montana.

There are many types of self catering vacation rental accommodation ranging from ranches and cabins in horseback rode countryside to splendid period dwellings in the urban areas with chalets gracing the snow topped skiing areas.
