A Travel Guide to New Hampshire

New Hampshire is an eastern state surrounded by Vermont on its western border, Maine on its eastern with Massachusetts forming its southern border. The most northern tip of New Hampshire reaches into the Canadian province of Ottawa with its most easterly tip reaching onto a small but beautiful stretch of the Atlantic Ocean. New Hampshire was the first state to break from the yoke of British control and was the first to create its own state constitution. Its capital is Concord.

As typical of the United States capitals, Concord has its own State Capitol building and the Governor’s Mansion. However, it is also home to the memory of the14th President of the United States: Franklin Pierce. His home is located in Concord and is known as Pierce Manse. Historic sites, museums and monuments also adorn the capital making Concord a very enjoyable tour for both the sightseer and adventuring history buff.

However, for rawer history dating to the Industrial Revolution there is Manchester in New Hampshire. It is the largest city with over twice the amount of population of its capital. Though New Hampshire broke away from British control, Manchester modelled itself on the industry that promoted the city of Manchester in England to the first industrialised city in the world. There are still the remnants of the history of that great age recorded through remaining buildings and also recorded in the museums; and akin to its namesake the history of the mills that wove the cotton into fabric making both of these cities productive in the textile industry.

There are other interesting attractions, of a pastoral nature, which can be visited on the scenic railroads to places like America’s Stonehenge in Salem. It is a series of megalithic stones over four thousand years old, loaded with the same profound mystery of those ancient stones in Wiltshire, England. Salem is also home to Canobie Lake Park which is a great place to take the family; it is full of rides, a roller coaster and inspired signature favourites such as the Yankee Cannonball.

Hampshire’s primary location with its northern point bordering Canada gives excellent opportunity for some cross border duty free shopping and its eastern point on the Atlantic provides it with beach time opportunity for bathing, cruising or chartering a boat for deep sea fishing and not forgetting taking to the skis on the water. It is also the home to Water Country in Portsmouth that has its own rides and amusements designed around the water. There is also a boat that goes out regularly to take in the shoals of whales that frequent the area.

There are also opportunities for other sports such as skiing and snowshoeing during the winter season. There is also plenty of self-catering vacation rental accommodation to suit everybody’s needs from period style housing in the urban areas to more rustic locations with their log cabins and chalets. Many vacation homes in New Hampshire are typically equipped with many in-home items including indoor swimming pools.
