A Travel Guide to Tennessee

Tennessee as well as Missouri are the only states to be bordered by eight other states. Arkansas and Missouri runs along the west with the Mississippi River. Kentucky and Virginia cap it to the north. North Carolina defines its eastern border with the largest amount of neighbors of Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia forming the southern border. Nashville is the capital and Memphis has the largest population.

Nashville lies north of central Tennessee and is also considered the country music capital of the United States. Visitors can visit the Grand Ole Opry to take in a show or the country Music Hall of Fame to enjoy the history of music that is always sang with an accent. There is also an area of Nashville called Music Row that is home to hundreds of businesses dedicated to country, gospel and contemporary Christian music. There are also many museums located here including the art exhibition of 19th and 20th century artists’ work in an exactly reproduced replica of the Parthenon in Athens, Greece. There are also sporting events that are hosted regularly in the Gaylord Entertainment Centre and the beautiful Greek-revival style mansion known as the Belle Mead Plantation.

Memphis in the southwest on the border with Arkansas is also known for its’ music. And like Music Row in Nashville, Memphis also has its own area where you can hear the emotional resonance of the blues in Beale Street in clubs and bars and eateries. Sun Studio located in Memphis is home to many artists that have recorded there including the legendary blues BB King, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and the undisputed King of Rock n’ Roll Elvis Presley who recorded his first song “That’s All Right”. For the Elvis fans, there is also Gracelands –his home – a museum to his heritage. And for president buffs there is “The Hermitage” the home of Andrew Jackson – the seventh president of the United States.

Further east of Memphis we have the famous railroad city of Chattanooga. The former terminal station is now housed in a resort featuring historical railway exhibits. Tennessee is also the state with the most caves and some of the best are located in Chattanooga’s Lookout Mountain. This is an area of wondrous beauty featuring scenic views of the Ruby Falls – waterfalls and natural rock formed into weathered natural art. Alongside the Tennessee River there are many hiking trails and "America's Most Amazing Mile" the steepest passenger railway.

In East Tennessee there is Knoxville and south of its location nearing the border with North Carolina is Pigeon Forge where the theme park called Dollywood is based on Dolly Parton the famous country singer. Also near here is the Great Smoky National Park that is popular with hikers and horseback riders. There is also a host of streams around here offering anglers the opportunity to lure a trout.

There is plenty of self-catering vacation rental accommodation throughout the state of Tennessee from cabins in the mountains to vacation homes and condos in the towns and cities.
