A Travel Guide to Wisconsin

Wisconsin lies in the Midwest and Great Lakes area. It is bordered by the states of Minnesota to the west, Iowa on its southwest border with Illinois southward. The other borders are water borders with Lake Superior capping it to the north and eastwards a substantial part of the Michigan Lakes. The capital is Madison and the largest city is Milwaukee.

Wisconsin is a state that celebrates music and in Milwaukee there is a well-attended festival called Summerfest – ‘The World’s Largest Music Festival ‘. It is an annual event held at Henry Maier Festival Park. This venue also hosts the Milwaukee Irish Fest that has over 200 artists that sing in either English or Irish. Other music events are the Country Fest held in Cadott and the Hodag Country Festival in Oneida County.

Milwaukee also hosts other attractions such as the Milwaukee Art Museum that hosts over 20, 000 paintings with some dating back to the early pioneering days. For devoted bikers there is the Harley-Davidson Museum which features an interactive museum that centres on the history, culture and lifestyle that this iconic feat of American engineering. There are rooms full of these vintage vehicles including one that was rode by Elvis Presley. After exploring these road wonders why not experience the waters on a boat trip around Lake Michigan which Milwaukee lies beside.

There are four wonderful scenic routes to explore that also host their own sports. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore lies in the north, and is considered the largest and cleanest of the Great Lakes. It contains 21 islands and the most popular way of travelling to them is via kayak. Many of the islands contain lighthouses with Sand Island Lighthouse the local favourite. Fishing is very popular here with many species of salmon. The Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a trail that passes through nearly half of Wisconsin’s counties. This route is very popular with hikers and conservationists and lovers of birds and wildlife. The North Country National Scenic Trail is the longest of the eleven National Scenic Trails and at 4, 600 miles passes through seven states including Wisconsin and is a serious hike for the experienced back packer.

Wisconsin is the state with the most water after Alaska, Florida and Michigan. The Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway is a system of riverways that passes through Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin. It is also great for fishing especially for brook trout. The rivers are also frequented by regular canoes and boats and designated hiking trails that give way to cross country skiing in the winter.

Two of the most popular tourist activities other than the great outdoors include the House on the Rock - that hosts rooms, streets, gardens and shops with stunning architectural design and the Circus World Museum – that not only features circus artefacts and exhibits but also does live circus performances throughout the summer.

There is a wide variety of self catering vacation rentals in Wisconsin ranging from log cabins in the rural areas to townhouses and apartments in the cities.
